Over the years, Michael and I had talked about adoption, but we were always too busy. In September 2006, our five kids (ages 6-16) asked us to adopt instead of getting birthday and Christmas presents. James 1:27 encouraged us and we decided to offer our home to an orphan who was “in distress”.
After becoming a certified foster home, we waited for a child. God reminded us through worship at Trinity that “Faith will rise as we wait upon the Lord”. Then they asked us to do foster care for three months. We accepted and loved baby Robby until his mother took him back, one week before Christmas.
Although that was one of the most difficult moments we have ever faced as a family, taking care of Robby was a special blessing for us and we truly feel he was a gift from God. My friend, Julie, wrote down Romans 15:13 “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” We waited and trusted.
During one of our family’s busiest weeks, Camp TLC, we got a call from our social worker, Janice. There was an eight-year-old boy who needed a home. We were in the middle of camp and surely God wouldn’t do this to us NOW. After saying no, our social worker, also a Christ- follower, asked us to pray.
My prayer was “Father, lead Mike and help him be faithful and obey you. Help me to listen to Mike and obey him.” The next day Mike said yes. We obeyed the Lord and the reward has been incredible. David has been a blessing and we are now in the process of adopting him. The journey was worth it. God can be trusted-wait on Him!
